A Little History Of Cheltenham Florists

The team of florists at Make Their Day are confident that we can provide arrangements, bouquets, or single flowers for any occasion. Why are we so certain? We are passionate about our jobs, flowers, the town we live in and the nature that surrounds us. We find daily inspiration from our surroundings and are also inspired by the history of our town, not to mention the beautiful scenery on our doorstep. Therefore, we would like to share some of that history and the inspirations that lead us to be believe our artisanal florists are perfect for any floral needs a customer may have.

Cheltenham, located on the edge of the Cotswolds in the county of Gloucestershire, is a large spa town which hosts a number of festivals. Some of these festivals, such as the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, the Cheltenham Literature Festival and the Cheltenham Science Festival, are cultural in nature and feature some internationally renowned contributors. The town is also famous for the Cheltenham Festival, which is a meeting in the National Hunt racing calendar. It was first held in 1860 and is a four day event which takes place in March each year and usually coincides with St. Patrick’s Day. There are six races each day culminating in the Gold Cup steeplechase on the Friday.

The town stands on the River Chelt, which rises at Dowdeswell and runs through the town on its way to the River Severn. The recorded mention is in 803 and the town was awarded market charter in 1226. However, little remains of Cheltenham’s pre-spa history and it has been known as a health and holiday spa town since the discovery of mineral springs here in 1716. The natural beauty of the area, along with the presence of the mineral springs made the town the perfect spot for the great and the good of British society to enjoy the chance to relax away from the realities of life in Victorian Britain. Alice Liddell and Lewis Carroll were regular visitors to her grandparent’s house in Charlton Kings, and the house still contains the mirror, or looking glass, that was allegedly the inspiration for Caroll’s 1871 novel Through the Looking Glass.

To the south of the town lie the Cotswolds which were designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1966 and is the third largest protected landscape in the UK, covering 787 square miles with a population of over 140,000. Rare limestone grassland habitats, in addition to ancient beech woodlands typify the area although there are numerous different habitats which are home to many rare flowers and animals. Many florists have found inspiration on these rolling hills.

Badgeworth Site of Special Scientific Interest is a 3.08 hectare nature reserve which is one of only two sites in the UK where Adder’s-tongue Spearwort, known locally as the ‘Badgeworth buttercup’, can be found. This is an over wintering annual which normally flowers in late May, and the name Adder’s-tongue describes the leaves. Its flowers are relatively small and have yellow petals. One plant can have multiple flowers and seeds have been collected and sent to the Kew Seed Bank for safe keeping.

Cheltenham is home to over 600 acres of parks and gardens and is sometimes referred to as @The Garden Town of England’. It also home to a large number of SSI’s right on the doorstep, with the Malvern Hills and Wye Valleys joining the Cotswolds as AONB’s. It is little wonder so many come here for relaxation, inspiration and the chance to re-connect with nature.

The artisanal florists at Make Their Day are inspired by the beauty of nature on our doorstep on a daily basis, and are confident that after reading this brief history the reader will be, too.  Our florists are ready to create the arrangement or bouquet for any occasion and offer a same day delivery service.
